about

This Sweetness Unto Deafness: Pastilan Dong!

With its pulse in noise rock and its heart in shoegaze, Pastilan Dong! has released a guitar-laden debut record with a sonic contour that shifts between crystalline tones and massive, hissing waves of distortion. The band’s songs (with the exception of a few tracks) are minimalistic and the vocals are fragile, sheathed in reverb, and oftentimes threatened by a wild crescendo of drums and guitars. Your ears will drip with blood and honey.

Pastilan Dong! is the musical persona of Kaloy Olavides, an artist known for testing the limits of what gallerygoers can enjoy or withstand. It’s no surprise that his music is similarly challenging. The nearly twenty-minutes-long first track alone tests listeners’ tolerance for sustained, textured noise—an unapologetic introduction to the record.

But—should the timid turn away too soon—Pastilan Dong! also delivers doses of calm to counteract the frenetic: Love songs and non-distorted instrumental pieces create spaces around the louder, rhythmically driven songs.

My own favorite is “Intawon,” a ballad sung in Visayan, and whose title is an expression of loss and longing, something close to “what a pity” in English. Built from a two-chord pattern that’s alternatingly strummed clean and supersaturated with face-corroding fuzz, this song—placed in the middle of the album—acts as a point of equilibrium for the collision of noise and harmony of Pastilan Dong!. To my ear, it sums up what makes the band so enchanting and endearing: simplicity and stark contrast, a vulnerability even at high volumes, and the use of a regional language hardly heard in Philippine rock music. When all is said and done, Pastilan Dong! is My Bloody Visayan.
